At least eight shops were completely destroyed in a severe fire at Baishari Market in Naikhongchhari Upazila, Bandarban. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4. Initial reports suggest the fire started from a mosquito coil.

Abdul Karim Bantu, chairman of the market management committee, said the fire originated from a gas cylinder shop adjacent to a religious school (Hefzkhana). The fire spread rapidly due to flammable materials inside the shops. Local residents tried to extinguish the fire with water and sand but were unsuccessful.

Later, the Naikhongchhari Fire Service arrived and controlled the fire. Fire Service officer Md. Shahin said the presence of gas cylinders and other combustible materials caused the fire to spread quickly. Timely intervention prevented further damage to the market.

Shopkeeper Shahidul Islam said, “I took a loan from the bank two days ago to buy new stock. Everything in my shop, including accounts, was burned. The loss is at least 2.5 million Taka.”

Another shopkeeper, Josim Uddin, claimed, “My father was sleeping in the shop at night. We didn’t use mosquito coils. I suspect someone intentionally set the fire.”

OC of Naikhongchhari Police, Md. Masrurul Haque, said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause. The market committee and local residents will assist in the inquiry. Locals say the affected shopkeepers are now completely destitute and have demanded immediate assistance from the authorities.
