User Complaints Rise After New Two-Factor Security Deadline Passed

Staff Reporter | PNN:
Users of Elon Musk-owned social media platform X are facing login issues following changes to two-factor security. Many users report being stuck in an “endless loop,” while others claim their accounts are completely locked.

On October 24, X announced that users employing Passkeys or hardware security keys (like YubiKey) for two-factor authentication would need to re-register on the new x.com domain. Users relying on authenticator apps are unaffected.

X explained that the move is part of redirecting from twitter.com to x.com. However, Passkeys and security keys are digitally tied to the old twitter.com domain, so they cannot be directly transferred to x.com. Users must manually unenroll and re-register on x.com.

X had warned that accounts of those who did not re-register or choose a new two-factor method by 10 November would be locked. Since the deadline, many users have reported login failures, error messages during re-registration, or being trapped in a loop.

This is the latest technical problem on X, following several issues and controversies since Twitter’s transition to X under Musk. X has not provided a comment, and Musk appears unaffected, continuing regular posts. Analysts warn that the technical glitch may increase user frustration and damage X’s reputation.
