US sending additional 5,000 troops to Poland, new uncertainty in NATO alliance

US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. He made the announcement in a social media post, where he also mentioned his close relationship with Poland’s new right-wing President Karol Nawrocki.

This sudden announcement by Trump has created renewed discussion and uncertainty regarding the US military presence in Europe. Earlier, a planned troop deployment to Poland had been canceled, raising questions about the US’s long-term commitment to NATO.

In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said on social media that a good alliance is built on mutual cooperation, respect, and shared security. He welcomed the US decision. Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that the decision ensures that the US troop presence in the country will remain as before.

However, broader US policy changes have also come under discussion. The Trump administration has long been reviewing military spending in Europe under its “America First” policy. Previously, a withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany was announced, along with plans to reduce overall military presence in Europe.

In addition, the Pentagon recently canceled a pre-planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland. The new decision to send 5,000 troops has created confusion among NATO allies, as many countries are uncertain about Washington’s long-term strategy.

Although NATO Secretary-General welcomed the decision, he also said that Europe must reduce its dependence on the United States. Meanwhile, European officials say that the US’s frequently changing policies are making defense planning difficult.

According to analysts, while the security situation in Europe remains fragile due to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, such US decisions could further challenge NATO’s internal stability.
