International Desk | PNN:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that new U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems have arrived in the country to help counter Russian attacks. These advanced defense systems are considered the most effective weapons for Ukraine so far, capable of intercepting ballistic and cruise missiles from the enemy.

On Sunday night (November 3), Zelensky tweeted, “More Patriots are now in Ukraine and are becoming operational. However, more systems are needed to protect critical infrastructure and cities.”

The shortage of Patriot systems has been a major challenge for Ukraine throughout the nearly four-year-long Russia-Ukraine war. Zelensky has repeatedly urged Western allies to increase the supply, although production limitations and stock constraints have caused delays.

Currently, NATO member states are coordinating to provide Ukraine with large-scale weapon support, with European countries and Canada purchasing them from the United States.

Meanwhile, the current U.S. administration under Donald Trump has reportedly been relatively restrained in providing military aid to Ukraine compared to the previous Biden administration.

On Sunday night, a Russian drone attack in the northeastern Sumy region of Ukraine killed one person and injured five members of a single family, including two children. Another attack in the same region injured two women.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 12 different types of missiles and 138 drones overnight. Local administrator Oleh Hryhorov stated, “The Russian forces deliberately targeted civilians sleeping at night.”

Additionally, in the central Dnipro region, a missile strike caused a fire at a business establishment, injuring one person. In the southern Mykolaiv region, Russian drones hit fuel infrastructure, disrupting electricity and gas supply.

In response to Russian aggression, Ukrainian forces carried out counterattacks. The Ukrainian military headquarters reported that Russian forces’ oil refinery in Saratov was struck by drones, causing a fire. This was the fourth attack on the facility in seven weeks. The refinery is located about 500 km from the Russian border and can process several million tons of oil annually.

Ukraine also claims to have struck Russian military equipment and supply centers in the occupied Luhansk region.

Last week, Zelensky stated, “Our long-range strikes have reduced Russia’s oil refining capacity by at least 20 percent.”

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces had made progress in Pokrovsk, encircling Ukrainian troops stationed at the city’s railway and industrial areas.

The situation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to intensify, although the international community is still calling for a negotiated resolution.
