PNN News Desk | Mymensingh:
In Gouripur, Mymensingh, the area became tense as BNP supporters protested against the denial of nomination. On Tuesday (November 4), supporters of the leader Ahmad Tayebur Rahman Hiron, who was denied nomination, blocked the Dhaka-bound Intercity Haor Express train and held a protest march.
Eyewitnesses reported that around 9:35 am, when the train reached Gouripur Junction, the angry supporters lay down on the tracks, obstructing the train’s journey. After about 37 minutes, the situation was brought under control by the railway police and administration, and the train resumed its journey to Dhaka.
Gouripur Railway Station Master Shafikul Islam said, “Due to the blockade, the train departed 37 minutes later than the scheduled time. The police intervened and restored normalcy.”
Earlier, on Monday night, after the central BNP announced its nomination list, tensions arose among a faction of the upazila BNP. Supporters of Ahmad Tayebur Rahman Hiron staged protest marches and rallies the same day due to the denial of nomination. On Tuesday morning, a protest march was again held in Gouripur municipality.
Sujit Kumar, member secretary of the municipal BNP, said at the protest rally, “If the party decision is not revised, we will be forced to organize hartals and other strict measures.”
Meanwhile, Hiron’s wife, Saida Masrur, participating in the protest, said, “For the past 17 years, my husband has actively participated in BNP movements. Despite imprisonment and torture, he never left the party. We cannot accept such injustice toward him today.”
Local leaders of the upazila BNP, volunteer organization, and student wing addressed the rally and demanded Hiron’s nomination be reinstated.
It is worth noting that the central executive committee of BNP has nominated Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain as the final candidate for Mymensingh-3 (Gouripur) constituency under the Dhanshish (Paddy Sheaf) symbol.
