Tragic Accident at a Madrasa in Brahmanbaria: 7 Students and a Caretaker Burned by Electric Shock

According to local sources, a piece of cloth fell from the roof of the madrasa’s four-story building and got stuck in an electric wire. In an attempt to retrieve the cloth, the caretaker, Aleya Begum (30), used a steel pipe through the window. When the pipe touched the electric wire, she received a severe electric shock, which ignited the cloth. The fire quickly spread inside the room, burning the students.

The injured students are Nusrat (10) from Nobinagar, Sadia Khatun (6) from Sirajganj, Rojwa Akhtar (12) from Sadar Upazila, Nusrat (10) from Vhadughar, Jannatul Mawa (8), Umme Taisan (5) from Shimrail village in Kasba, and the caretaker Aleya Begum (30).

Quari Mohammad Abdullah, a teacher at Darun Najat Women’s Madrasa, said that the victims were immediately rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar General Hospital. Later, six of them, in critical condition, were sent to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Senior staff nurse Hasim Khan of the hospital said, “All eight were admitted. All are burn patients. Six of them suffered burns over most parts of their bodies and were sent to Dhaka, while the rest are receiving treatment here.”

Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Obaidur Rahman said that police have begun investigating the incident at the scene. Preliminary assessment suggests that the proximity of the electric wire to the madrasa window may have caused the accident.

Locals reported that hanging electric wires around the madrasa building had posed a risk for a long time. Following the incident, residents have demanded that the wires be removed immediately.
