On Monday morning, top criminal Tarik Saif Mamun (55) was shot dead in front of the National Medical Institute Hospital in Old Dhaka. According to police and eyewitnesses, the assailants shot him from close range around 10:30 AM.

Sources from the victim’s family and police revealed that Mamun had been staying in a rented house in Badda for two days. He left home in the morning to appear in court for a case. CCTV footage shows Mamun running to escape, but he was shot within three to four seconds from two distances. The assailants then fled the scene.

Mamun’s wife, Bilkis Akhter, believes followers of former top criminal Sanjidul Islam Imon were behind the killing. Imon’s men had previously attempted to kill Mamun.

Police said Mamun and Imon used to terrorize areas in Dhaka such as Hazaribagh, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, and Tejgaon. They were known as the “Imon-Mamun” gang. Mamun was also an accused in the murder cases of actor Sohel Chowdhury and former army chief Aziz Ahmed’s brother Saeed Ahmed Tipu. His official records state he was born in 1970 in Laxmipur.

SI Md. Yasin of Kotwali Police Station said that after hearing gunshots, he reached the scene to find Mamun shot and lying on the ground. Police and hospital security inspected the scene.

Family members were seen grieving at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The body has been sent to the morgue, and an investigation has begun. Eyewitnesses said two people on a motorcycle shot Mamun from behind and fled. Police have increased security in the area and are investigating the motive and suspects.
