Swiss police reported that a crowded bar at the luxurious alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana in Switzerland was engulfed in flames, resulting in many deaths and injuries.

Police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion stated on Thursday, “The fire broke out today between 1:30 a.m. (GMT 00:30) at a bar named ‘Le Constellation.’” At that time, New Year celebrations were ongoing.

He added, “There were more than a hundred people present in the building. We are seeing many injured and many fatalities.” The police did not disclose the exact number of casualties, but many people are receiving medical treatment for burn injuries. Local media reported that at least 10 people have died, though the actual number could be higher.

Initial reports suggested an explosion, but the police said the exact cause of the fire is still unknown. Photos published in Swiss media show the bar engulfed in flames, with emergency service personnel nearby. Police stated that a large-scale emergency response has been activated. Firefighters, police, and rescue teams are at the scene assisting the injured.

A medical source told the national broadcaster RTS that hospitals in the French-speaking part of Switzerland are overwhelmed with burn victims.

Crans-Montana is located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, just 40 kilometers north of the Matterhorn. Lathion stated, “It is a world-renowned ski resort that attracts many tourists.”

A reception center and helpline have been set up for injured families. The entire area has been closed off, and a no-fly zone has been imposed over Crans-Montana.
