In the early 1990s, Salman Shah created a sensation in Dhallywood (Bangladeshi cinema). On screen, he often paired with Shabnur, and in just four years, they appeared together in 14 films, leaving a lasting mark in the history of Bangladeshi cinema. Despite the passage of time, their popularity remains undiminished.

Speaking to Prothom Alo from Australia, Shabnur shared her memories of Salman Shah. She said, “Salman Shah treated me like a younger sister and used to call me ‘Pichchi’. His parents also treated me like their own daughter.”

Shabnur added, “I also saw Salman as a brother. We shared a wonderful friendship. Salman was a bit weak at dancing and would often say, ‘Show me some dance moves.’ I would happily demonstrate for him.”

Salman Shah’s assistant, Munsur Ali, also mentioned, “Salman treated all his co-actresses with respect. He saw Shabnur as a younger sister.”

Recalling Salman Shah, Shabnur said, “His death was the biggest shock of my life. I suddenly heard the news that he was no more. I couldn’t believe it. Later, when it was confirmed, I was completely devastated.”

She added, “If Salman were still alive, the face of Bangladeshi cinema might have been different. Our pairing could have become legendary, like Uttam Kumar–Suchitra Sen.”

Shabnur clarified that her relationship with Salman Shah was never romantic; it was purely brother-sister like. She said, “Some people created stories about our relationship, and some even exploited it for business. It hurt me because I built my career with a lot of hard work.”

The 14 films they starred in together include: Tumi Amar, Bikkhov, Sujon Sokhi, Shopner Thikana, Mahamilon, Bichar Hobe, Tomake Chai, Shopner Prithibi, Jibon Songshar, Chawa Theke Pawa, Prem Piyasi, Shopner Nayok, Anand Oshru, and Buker Vitor Agun.

Although Salman Shah is no longer with us, his memory and presence continue to live on in Bangladeshi cinema. Shabnur believes that, as time goes on, their names will continue to be spoken together—as one of the most beloved and popular pairs in Bangladeshi film history.
