The Ukrainian military has withdrawn from Sieversk in eastern Donetsk due to superior Russian numbers and equipment. Sieversk remains under Ukrainian fire control. Russian forces also captured Hraboivsk in Sumy region near the border.

Sieversk is strategically important for protecting key northern Donetsk towns like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. The conflict continues amid unresolved peace agreements over Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea. Russia controls about 19% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, Luhansk, and over 80% of Donetsk.

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the US proposes creating a “free economic zone” in Donetsk, which Russia considers a demilitarized area. Recent Russian drone and missile attacks have killed at least three Ukrainians, including a four-year-old. Pope Leo appealed for peace on Christmas Day, noting the war persists. The Ukraine-Russia conflict has lasted nearly three years, with Russia’s full-scale invasion starting in February 2022.
