Portugal secured a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dominant 9–1 victory over Armenia on Sunday, topping Group F. On the same day, Italy lost 4–1 to Norway, allowing Norway to return to the World Cup after 28 years, with Erling Haaland scoring twice.
After setbacks against Hungary and Ireland, Portugal finally regained form. Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s suspension, midfield stars Bruno Fernandes and João Neves shone with a hat-trick. Additional goals came from Renato Veiga, Gonçalo Ramos, and Francisco Conceição.
Neves said after the match, “Team victory is more important than individual success. But scoring three goals, including the first, is certainly gratifying.”
This marks the seventh consecutive World Cup appearance for the Euro 2016 champions.
Ronaldo wrote on social media, “We’re at the World Cup! Let’s move forward, Portugal!” However, if his suspension is extended, he may miss the tournament’s start.
In Hungary, Ireland achieved a dramatic 3–2 victory with Troy Parrott’s hat-trick in the 96th minute, securing a playoff spot. This was Parrott’s second hat-trick within the week.
In Milan’s San Siro, Norway needed a peculiar goal margin to top Italy. Italy initially showed hope, but Norway overwhelmed them. Within 60 minutes, Haaland scored twice in a minute, changing the course of the match. In the final moments, Jørgen Larsen scored again to secure a 4–1 victory.
Haaland said, “There was a lot of pressure, but we did it. The feeling is incredible.” Captain Ødegaard added, “It’s a unique moment for the entire country.”
