Political parties have expressed concerns regarding the independence of the Election Commission (EC). They warned that if the commission fails to strictly enforce the code of conduct, its independence could be questioned, and the credibility of elections could be compromised.

The concerns were raised during the third day of the EC dialogue held at the Election Building’s conference hall in Agargaon, Dhaka. Parties urged the EC to take strict action if major parties violate the code of conduct, as such violations could lead to booth capture, irregularities, and unrest.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin stated, “Despite various challenges, we are preparing for the elections. Our intentions are clear. With everyone’s cooperation, fair elections are possible. The commission will not tolerate illegal actions and will enforce the code of conduct strictly.”

On Monday, the EC met with 11 political parties, including Bikalpodhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Kallyan Party, Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP), Bangladesh Islami Front, Khelafat Majlis, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA), Zaker Party, Bangladesh Development Party (BDP), Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Front, and Bangladesh Muslim League (BML).

Major parties highlighted that if the two largest parties do not follow the code, the EC should annul candidates’ nominations in a few constituencies to set an example. Other parties suggested measures like holding referendums alongside parliamentary votes, increasing polling centers and booths, and stricter enforcement of rules.

CEC Nasir Uddin emphasized that maximum steps would be taken to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election. Violations may lead to cancellation of votes or polling stations, and no exceptions will be made.

On Wednesday, dialogues will continue with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and 12 other parties.
