Manchester City Defeat Liverpool in Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th Coaching Match

On Sunday night, Manchester City defeated Liverpool for the third time in Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th coaching match, securing his 716th career victory. The win at the Etihad Stadium was celebrated by fans chanting “We’ve got, Guardiola…” in honor of their coach.

Last season, injuries and continuous championship pressures had slightly weakened City’s squad. However, with the inclusion of young players and tactical adjustments by Guardiola, the team has returned to its previous excellent form. Following the win, City climbed to second place in the Premier League table, four points behind Chelsea.

Guardiola commented, “When a team progresses month after month, it eventually reaches the title fight. We feel we are on that path. The team’s strength has returned, and I can feel it.”

The first goal came from a Matthias Nunes cross, headed into the net by Norwegian striker Erling Haaland. Haaland now has 14 Premier League goals in 11 matches this season.

Guardiola also noted, “We have become more unpredictable in attack and defense. Opponents don’t know what we will do next, which makes us strong. This kind of energy is very important in matches.”

City’s midfielders Nico Gonzalez, Bernardo Silva, and Jeremy Doku played key roles. Left-back Nico O’Reilly successfully marked Mohamed Salah and won five tackles. Guardiola praised O’Reilly’s performance and stated that the entire team played excellently.

Former Premier League striker Dion Dublin said, “Guardiola has rebuilt his team according to his vision. This is the old City we remember, a team that dominated matches.”

Liverpool dropped to eighth place after this loss, with coach Arne Slot admitting, “Five losses are too many. Now is not the time to think about the title.”
