Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has announced she will no longer speak publicly on political issues as she did before. While she had expressed strong opinions about the U.S. political climate previously, she now prefers a measured approach.

In a podcast interview with The New York Times for her new movie Die My Love, Lawrence said she wants to speak cautiously and avoid causing new controversies.

She added: “I am an artist. I don’t want people to turn away from my work because of my political views. I want them to get lost in the story, not politics. If my words worsen situations, I’ll remain silent.”

Lawrence was a vocal critic during the Trump administration. After the election, she wrote: “Only white men feel safe in the U.S. now, as only their rights are recognized.” In the recent interview, she said celebrities cannot influence elections and political commentary is no longer necessary.

She stated that her current focus is storytelling. Her production company is making a film about three Afghan women and a documentary on anti-abortion laws.

Asked if she regrets previous statements, she laughed: “Probably yes. Now I think of removing memory cards from all cameras.” She added that although they knew what Trump could do in a second term, they still chose him.

Her new movie Die My Love was released last Friday. Through its premiere and promotions, Lawrence wants to focus on her work rather than political commentary.
