Bangladesh women’s cricket has been shaken by serious allegations made by former captain Jahanara Alam. In a Thursday interview with a YouTube channel, she accused former national team selector Monjurul Islam and the late women’s cricket department in-charge Touhid Mahmud of sexually harassing her during her tenure in the national team.
Jahanara further alleged that several former and current coaching staff and players were involved in deliberately sabotaging her cricket career.
Following the revelation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) quickly responded. In a press release issued late Thursday night at 11:45 PM, the BCB announced that, considering the sensitive nature of the allegations, an investigation committee has been formed.
The board’s statement said, “A former member of the national women’s cricket team has raised concerns about misconduct by certain individuals associated with the team. Understanding the gravity of the matter, the board has formed an investigation committee, which will submit its report and recommendations within 15 working days.”
The BCB added, “We are committed to ensuring a safe, respectful, and professional environment for all players and staff. Necessary actions will be taken based on the verified findings of the investigation.”
The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWA-B) has also supported Jahanara. In a statement, they said, “We do not want assurances or delays. The investigation must be concluded quickly, and exemplary action should be taken against those responsible.”
CWA-B further urged a thorough inquiry into such incidents at all levels, from the national women’s team to domestic cricket.
Earlier, in an interview with a national daily, Jahanara had also raised allegations against the current team captain Nigar Sultana, but the BCB had then dismissed the claims as baseless.
Jahanara Alam made her national team debut in 2011. One of the most experienced pace bowlers in Bangladesh women’s cricket history, she last represented the national team in December 2023 against Ireland. She is currently residing in Australia.
