Five Awami League leaders arrested in Thakurgaon over alleged sabotage plan

Police arrested five Awami League leaders in separate operations early Wednesday, November 12, in Haripur and Ranisankail Upazilas of Thakurgaon district on allegations of planning sabotage.

Police said they were planning to create unrest in the area on November 13. Based on this information, Haripur and Ranisankail police jointly conducted the operations and arrested the individuals.

The arrested are Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (50), general secretary of the Amgaon Union Ward-3 Jubo League and son of the late Soleman Ali of Belua village, Haripur Upazila; Abu Taher from the same village; Nazrul Islam Mondal from Bhaturia village; Khalilur Rahman and J. Narul Islam from Ranisankail Upazila.

OC Mohammad Zakaria Mondal of Haripur Police Station said, “Based on confidential information, we learned they were planning to destabilize the area on November 13. We acted on precise intelligence to arrest them.”

He added that cases are underway against the arrested, and further legal action will be taken based on investigation. Locals said law enforcement is on high alert due to recent political tensions in the area. Police confirmed efforts have been intensified to prevent any sabotage or unrest.
