A mysterious fire broke out at the Grameen Bank branch office in Chandura Bazar, Bijoynagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria. On Tuesday, November 11, late at night, miscreants set the office building on fire, completely burning it down.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Local sources reported that office furniture, important documents, and valuable equipment were entirely destroyed, causing an estimated financial loss of nearly one lakh taka.
Chandura branch manager Md. Shalim Uddin said, “After finishing our daily work, we closed the office and went home. At night, the night guard called to inform us that the office was on fire. We rushed to the scene and saw the blazing flames. With great effort, we managed to control the fire.”
He added, “After extinguishing the fire, we noticed the back window had been broken and found sticks soaked with petrol inside. Clearly, someone deliberately set the fire.”
A general diary (GD) was filed at Bijoynagar police station on Wednesday morning regarding the incident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bijoynagar Police Station, Md. Shahidul Islam, said, “The police reached the site as soon as we received the report. The bank authorities filed a GD, and we are investigating the matter seriously. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”
Local residents said several theft incidents had occurred in the area recently, and they view this arson as a planned act of destruction.
