In a massive fire early Friday morning at Alexander Market in Ramgati, Laxmipur, 15 businesses were completely destroyed. Additionally, five more shops suffered partial damage. Business owners estimate the total loss—including cash, inventory, and property—may exceed tens of millions of taka.

Two units of Ramgati Fire Service quickly reached the scene and, with the help of police and locals, managed to control the fire after nearly two hours. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire started from an electrical short circuit at Rasel’s Bismillah Store, a grocery shop, and quickly spread to adjacent shops.

OC Md. Kabir Hossain of Ramgati Police Station said, “At least 15 shops were burned down in this massive fire. Preliminary estimates suggest losses may exceed tens of millions of taka.”

Acting Station Officer Khokon Majumdar of Ramgati Fire Service confirmed that an electrical short circuit was the likely cause of the fire. He added that the two fire units worked for nearly two hours to control the blaze, but the exact extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Ramgati Upazila Executive Officer Syed Amjad Hossain said, “A list of affected businesses is being prepared, after which rehabilitation measures will be arranged.”

The fire completely destroyed at least 15 businesses, including grocery, garment, mobile, crockery, and cosmetics shops. The incident has spread fear and concern among the traders in the market.

The fire service and local administration are currently assessing the damaged shops and preparing for initial assistance and rehabilitation efforts.
