A tragic incident occurred on Thursday (November 6) at 6:00 PM in Insafnagar village of Ramkrishnapur Union, Daulatpur Upazila, Kushtia. Driven by extreme financial hardship, 25-year-old mother Reshma Khatun hanged her 2.5-year-old daughter Lamia Khatun and then committed suicide in the same manner.
Local sources reported that Reshma Khatun was the wife of expatriate Rahidul Islam, who went abroad two years ago. During his time overseas, he was unable to regularly send money for the household, leading to financial difficulties. Around the same time, Reshma fell ill. Unable to afford medical treatment, she became mentally distressed.
Overcome with frustration and despair, on Thursday evening she first killed her daughter and then hanged herself in a room.
Neighbors, noticing the house had been locked for a long time, suspected something was wrong and forced the door open. Finding no response, they broke the door and discovered the bodies of the mother and daughter hanging, and quickly alerted the police.
OC Solaiman Sheikh of Daulatpur Police Station confirmed the incident, stating, “Police went to the scene around 6:30 PM on Thursday. The bodies of the mother and child were recovered and sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Further details will be known after the autopsy report.”
Locals said the main cause of this tragic event was Reshma Khatun’s mental stress due to financial crisis and inability to afford medical treatment.
