A video of DACSU member Sarbmitra Chakma using a stick to drive away an elderly man during Tuesday’s eviction of drug dealers, homeless people, and illegal shops on Dhaka University campus went viral, sparking widespread discussion and criticism.
In the video, Chakma is seen directing the elderly man to leave the campus with a stick, while a member of the proctorial team also strikes his bag to intimidate him.
Many criticized the treatment of the elderly man, while some students and DACSU leaders argued he was involved in drug distribution on campus and had ignored repeated warnings.
Student leader Ibrahim Hossain wrote on Facebook: “Power doesn’t mean instilling fear; actions should be peaceful.” Other students supported the eviction, stating it was necessary for campus safety.
DACSU Social Services Secretary AB Zubayer suggested that while Chakma aimed for a drug-free campus, legal procedures through the proctorial team could have been smoother.
Chakma himself stated, “The elderly man in the video was removed from the metro station area. There was another elderly drug user. Removing such people sometimes requires sticks. My goal is a campus free from homeless people, drugs, and harassment.” He added that he will not be on the ground permanently but will continue to work for a safe campus.
