U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff described meetings with Ukrainian, Russian, and European diplomats in Miami to discuss ending the war in Moscow as “productive and constructive.”
On Sunday, discussions focused on resolving the nearly four-year conflict using U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan. No clear progress has been made toward a ceasefire, particularly regarding Russian-occupied territories.
Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev on Saturday and with Ukrainian and European officials on Sunday. Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov also attended, along with U.S. President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Witkoff and Umerov said in a joint statement, “Sunday’s discussions were productive and constructive. Focus was on establishing a shared strategic vision among Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe, including detailed timelines and next steps.”
Four main documents were discussed: the 20-point plan, “Multilateral Security Assurance Framework,” “U.S.-Ukraine Security Assurance Framework,” and an economic and prosperity plan.
Russian foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov commented that requested changes by Ukraine and European allies do not increase the likelihood of peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the talks “constructive” and said progress is moving at a good pace, though he warned, “Everything depends on whether Russia truly wants to end the war.”
French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly preparing to discuss with Putin in the coming days.
Europe has pledged $100 billion in financial aid to Ukraine over the next two years, marking a historic event in the country’s history.
