In Madanpur, Narayanganj port area, the death of a garment worker, Rina (30), sparked protests as coworkers blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. On Monday morning, November 3, workers from Lari’s Fashion factory sat in front of the factory, halting traffic and causing a several-kilometer-long jam.

The deceased, Rina, was the daughter of Dulal from Pakundia Upazila, Kishoreganj. Workers alleged that she suddenly fell ill during her night shift on Sunday. Despite requesting leave, management did not approve it. Shortly after, she lost consciousness inside the factory. She was taken to a local Isha Khan Hospital, treated initially, and then referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she passed away at 9 p.m. while receiving treatment.

The news of her death enraged coworkers, who immediately staged a road blockade. Long lines of vehicles formed on both sides of the highway.

Kanchpur Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Abdul Qader Zilani said, “Angry workers have blocked the highway. Police are present to control the situation.”

Narayanganj Industrial Police Intelligence Inspector Selim Badsha added, “A female worker died at Dhaka Medical following an incident last night, prompting workers to block the road. Police are working to calm the situation.”

Locals said workers are deeply dissatisfied with the attitude and responsiveness of the authorities involved in the incident. To ease tensions, administration and police have implemented special monitoring.
