BNP is in the final stages of finalizing its sole candidate list ahead of the national parliamentary elections. Today, Monday, a standing committee meeting will be held at the party chairman’s political office in Gulshan, where names of candidates for nearly 200 constituencies may be provisionally finalized. BNP’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, is expected to participate virtually from the UK.
According to party sources, after the standing committee meeting, a separate session will be held with members of the organizational team. In that meeting, discussions may take place on region-based candidates, and instructions may be given to finalize the list. Through this process, BNP is preparing to release a sole candidate list while reserving certain seats for alliance partner parties.
BNP has been actively preparing for the 13th national parliamentary election over the past few months. Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has assessed the eligibility and popularity of candidates through multiple surveys in 300 constituencies. He has also consulted the organizational team and directly spoken with candidates in potentially sensitive constituencies.
Party leaders indicated that the political situation arising from the July National ID issuance and recommendations of the National Unity Commission will also be discussed in today’s meeting. The BNP leadership believes that hasty decisions or street reactions at this stage could be detrimental to party strategy. Instead, it is crucial to maintain organizational unity with full preparation for election participation.
According to an internal source, Tarique Rahman has urgently summoned Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed to London, likely to discuss election strategy and the implementation of the July National ID.
A senior party leader said, “Officials with Jamaat affiliations have increased influence in the current administration. While BNP may have an edge in popularity during elections, ensuring administrative neutrality is now the main challenge.”
Party sources expect that today’s meeting will both set electoral strategy and formally announce the election campaign by preliminarily approving the list of sole candidates.
