PNN News Desk | Barguna:
An arson attack occurred at the 36 July Martyrs’ Memorial, a liberation war monument, in Barguna town. On Wednesday (12 November) late at night, unidentified miscreants set fire to the base of the memorial near the Circuit House. The incident has created tension in the area.

According to local sources, around 1:15 a.m., a group of miscreants poured flammable liquid at the base of the memorial and set it on fire before fleeing. An 11-second video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the attackers shouting, “Let’s go, go!” after setting the fire.

The police reached the scene immediately and controlled the fire. Fortunately, no major damage occurred to the memorial.

Barguna Sadar OC Md. Yakub Hossain said, “We visited the scene as soon as we received the news. Immediate action prevented the fire from spreading. The incident is under thorough investigation.”

Additionally, on the same night, some miscreants tried to set fire along the Barguna–Bagerhat road in Chandkhali. Locals helped the police extinguish the fire quickly.

By Thursday morning, political tension was high in the town. BNP and Jamaat-affiliated parties were holding gatherings along Sadar Road, while no Awami League or allied activists were seen on the streets.

The district administration suspects that the arson at the memorial may have been a planned sabotage, and police and intelligence agencies have launched a joint investigation to identify the perpetrators.
