Tolan, an artificial intelligence-powered app designed to help people organise their daily tasks, navigate the complexities of personal relationships and receive emotional support, has secured another $30 million in investment. The new funding has doubled the total capital raised by the company. It has also pushed the startup’s valuation beyond its previous valuation of $120 million.

According to a report by technology news outlet Upstarts Media, the latest funding round included investments from Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew. Tolan has not disclosed its new valuation. However, estimates from PitchBook, a provider of investment data, suggest that the startup could be worth more than $268 million. PitchBook has described its confidence in this estimate as “medium.”

Tolan is essentially an AI companion that allows users to interact through a cartoon-style character. The app is designed to help people discuss various personal problems, plan daily activities, manage their emotions and work towards achieving specific goals. Access to all its features is available through different tiers of paid subscriptions.

The company claims that it currently has more than 250,000 active users. Over the past year, these users have engaged in 70 million conversations with the app. According to information provided by Tolan, approximately 70 percent of its users are women, while 40 percent are parents.

The company has also reported progress in generating revenue. Tolan told Upstarts Media that its annual recurring revenue has now reached the tens of millions of dollars. This means the company is generating a growing stream of income through subscriptions and recurring services.

Tolan’s progress in the AI companion market is believed to be closely linked to its acceptance among users. In addition to conversations, the app helps users create task lists and manage their everyday responsibilities. Such applications may be particularly useful for people who need additional assistance with planning and organising their work. However, independently verified information about the app’s popularity across different user groups remains limited.

Previous attempts to develop AI companions have not always received the expected response. The hardware-based AI companion “Friend,” for example, faced negative reactions from some users. Meanwhile, Character.AI, known for allowing users to converse with AI-generated characters, has recently filed for bankruptcy, according to the report. The process of bringing its remaining employees into Disney is underway, while Disney has acquired some of the company’s assets.

Competition is also increasing for Tolan. Many current AI agents are moving beyond simple conversations and increasingly seeking to help users plan tasks, manage their time and achieve their goals directly. Meta’s “Muse” AI agent is another initiative in this area, using engaging avatars to interact with users. Meta also plans to introduce it to the market as a hardware product in the future.

At the same time, the risks of using AI to provide emotional support and assistance with personal matters cannot be overlooked. Several companies have faced lawsuits alleging that conversations with their AI chatbots had harmful effects on users’ mental well-being. Some lawsuits have also alleged possible links between chatbot conversations and incidents of suicide. Whether these allegations have been proven in court is a separate matter in each case.

Consequently, ensuring safe and responsible AI services while maintaining user trust could become an important challenge for Tolan. Although the new investment may help the company expand, its long-term position in the market will depend largely on the effectiveness of its services, user safety and its ability to navigate intensifying competition.
