Trump Contradicts U.S. Intelligence Chief on Iran’s Nuclear Intentions

PNN News Desk | June 18, 2025

Washington D.C. – In a rare public rebuke of his own intelligence leadership, U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday dismissed the assessment of Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard, who recently testified that Iran is not actively pursuing a nuclear weapon.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, President Trump directly contradicted Gabbard’s testimony before Congress, where she stated that the U.S. intelligence community had "no evidence" suggesting Tehran was building a nuclear warhead. "I don't care what she said," Trump stated when asked about her remarks. "I think they were very close to having one."

This marks the first time in Trump’s second term that he has publicly disputed the judgment of his top intelligence officer, raising eyebrows among both political analysts and national security experts.

Trump’s dismissal of Gabbard’s view appeared to support Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims that Iran posed an immediate nuclear threat. Netanyahu recently defended Israel's airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, asserting they were necessary to preempt potential nuclear escalation by Tehran.

The President’s remarks also follow his early departure from the G7 Summit in Canada, during which Iran’s regional behavior and nuclear ambitions were reportedly discussed behind closed doors.

While geopolitical tensions simmer, the Atlanta Federal Reserve is forecasting a 3.8% GDP rebound in the second quarter of the U.S. economy, a significant uptick following a slight contraction in the first quarter.

Tulsi Gabbard, a former congresswoman and military veteran, was appointed DNI during Trump’s second term and has emphasized intelligence independence and caution in foreign policy assessments. Her testimony to Congress in March reiterated the official U.S. stance that Iran had ceased active weapons development, even while enriching uranium at higher levels since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Trump’s repudiation of that assessment reflects growing pressure within his administration to adopt a more confrontational stance toward Iran, particularly in alignment with Israeli policy and domestic hawkish factions.

The U.S. President’s comments are expected to provoke international scrutiny, particularly among signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), many of whom remain committed to diplomacy over military escalation.

As tensions rise, all eyes are now on Tehran’s response — and on whether Trump’s rhetoric signals a shift toward renewed confrontation in the Middle East.
