At least 54 people were injured in a severe explosion at a mosque in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. The incident occurred on Friday during Friday prayers at a mosque located in a school compound in the Kelapa Gading area of North Jakarta.

Asep Edi Suheri, Chief of Jakarta Metropolitan Police, stated that the cause of the explosion is not yet confirmed. Police and fire department personnel are working at the site, and preliminary investigations are ongoing. Several of the injured are in serious condition, with many suffering burns. All victims have been admitted to nearby hospitals.

Footage from local media shows the mosque and surrounding area cordoned off by police, with multiple ambulances lined up nearby. Authorities believe that the explosion did not cause major structural damage to the mosque.

Eyewitnesses reported that during the prayers, a sudden loud noise occurred, and the mosque quickly filled with smoke, causing panic among worshippers.

The police said that the bomb disposal unit is investigating whether the explosion was caused by a mechanical fault, a gas leak, or another reason. The government has categorized the incident as a “serious accident” and formed a special medical team to ensure treatment for the injured.
