The lottery was attended by Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), senior officials from the Home Ministry, and representatives from the Chief Advisor’s office.
Additional Inspector General of Police (Administration) AKM Awlad Hossain told Prothom Alo that a shortlist was prepared from eligible officers of the 25th, 27th, and 28th police cadet batches. From this list, 64 officers were chosen through the lottery.
Multiple sources from the Home Ministry and Police Headquarters said that to ensure proper field administration during the elections, the Chief Advisor instructed that district-level postings be finalized via lottery. Consequently, new appointments in six districts had been temporarily withheld last week.
In the next phase, the appointment of police station officers-in-charge (OCs) will also be conducted through lottery, based on a list of honest, impartial, and qualified officers collected from unit heads.
A senior official said, “The lottery system has been used to avoid controversy regarding election-focused policing and ensure deployment of impartial officers in the field.”
This step is expected to maintain transparency and public confidence in election security and administrative operations.
