Explosion at Police Station in Srinagar, Indian-Administered Kashmir Kills 9, Injures Around 30

At least nine people were killed and around 30 injured when explosives stored at a police station in Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir, detonated suddenly. The blast occurred late Friday night at the Nowgam police station in southern Srinagar.

Local sources reported that the explosion was so intense that some bodies were completely burned. Remains were even found in houses 100–200 meters away.

Most of the deceased were police and forensic team members examining the explosives. Two Srinagar administration officials also died in the blast. Five critically injured individuals are in serious condition, and the death toll may rise.

Indian media NDTV reported that police stated this was not a terrorist attack, but a tragic accident that occurred while forensic and police teams were testing explosives stored at the station.

The incident occurred shortly after a car bombing in New Delhi killed at least 12 people, which India classified as a terrorist act. Suspects were arrested, and explosives and weapons recovered. India claims the Delhi attack involved the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and its Kashmir-based affiliate Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. Following this, at least 650 arrests were made in Kashmir.

The Nowgam police station had been investigating threatening posters published by JeM. The probe revealed links to a “white-clad terrorist network” with foreign handlers. During the investigation, nearly 3,000 kg of explosives were recovered, allegedly intended for a major attack.

Since the 1947 British withdrawal and the independence of India and Pakistan, the Kashmir region has remained disputed, with three wars and numerous conflicts, keeping the area highly unstable.
