The hanging body of Mst. Sumi Khatun, a 2018-19 session student of the Sanskrit Department at Dhaka University, was recovered from her home in Kushtia on Monday night (November 24). Her family and classmates suspect she committed suicide due to prolonged physical ailments. Police confirmed the suicide.

According to family and peers, Sumi suffered from a rare disease, Fibrous Dysplasia, along with other serious health problems. She had bone degeneration and underwent multiple surgeries without permanent relief. Chronic pain, mobility limitations, and physical weakness led to mental distress.

Classmates said despite her illness, Sumi tried to maintain a normal life and continue her studies. Frustration over being unable to help her family and persistent physical suffering left her struggling alone.

Sumi’s maternal aunt, Mst. Kanchani, reported that her parents found her hanging in her room before dawn, cut the rope, and later police verified the body and coordinated funeral arrangements. Her janaza (funeral prayer) was held after Zuhr.

OC Mominul Islam of Mirpur Police Station, Kushtia, stated, “DU student Sumi Khatun committed suicide. The body was recovered hanging, and investigations are ongoing.”
