OpenAI has announced a special promotional offer for users in India. Starting November 4, the ChatGPT Go plan will be available free for one year as part of a limited-time promotion. This is a major move for India, as OpenAI continues to expand in one of its key markets.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, though the company did not specify how long the promotion will last. Users who have already subscribed to the ChatGPT Go plan will also be eligible for the 12-month free offer.

The ChatGPT Go plan costs less than $5 and was launched in India in August. It is OpenAI’s most affordable subscription plan. After India, the plan was expanded to Indonesia and 16 other countries in Asia.

India is the world’s most populous country, with nearly 700 million smartphone users and over 100 crore internet subscribers, making it a critical market for OpenAI. The company opened an office in Delhi in August and is currently building a local team to expand its operations.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated earlier this year that after the U.S., India is the company’s second-largest market. However, monetizing ChatGPT’s paid plans in India remains a challenge. According to AppFigures data reviewed by TechCrunch, the ChatGPT app was downloaded 29 million times in a 90-day period ending in August, but in-app purchases generated only $3.6 million during the same time.

The ChatGPT Go plan provides users with ten times the benefits of the free version, including faster responses, image generation, and file uploads. It also offers advanced memory capabilities, enabling more personalized responses.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Vice President and Chief Nick Tarle said in a statement,
"Since launching ChatGPT Go in India, the creativity and engagement we have seen from our users is extremely inspiring. We are excited to see how our users will create, learn, and achieve new things using this tool."

Meanwhile, competing tech companies in India are also targeting younger users. For instance, Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro memberships to 36 crore users, while Google has launched a one-year free AI Pro plan for Indian students.

OpenAI will host a developer conference called DevDay X in Bengaluru on November 4, where special announcements for Indian software developers and businesses are expected.

The company claims that India is now one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with millions of users engaging with the chatbot daily.
